Tip-to-Tip
The distance from the tip of one step to the tip of another step. This measurement in geometrical terms would be the hypotenuse and can be used to calculate a railing degree or angle.
Step Drop
The vertical distance from a higher step to a lower step, or the vertical distance from a porch or landing to the ground or a lower surface. This measurement can be used to calculate the railing's degree and can be obtained using a level; by taking the horizontal level and measuring the distance from the bottom of the level to the target surface a precise drop can be obtained.
