2 Types of Wrought Iron Fences

2 Types of Wrought Iron Fences

Typically, when you think of wrought iron fences, these are the ones that pop up in your mind’s eye.

One way to make sure your property, no matter where it is, is to install metal fences. One of the most popular types of fencing material is wrought iron. However, do a little more digging, and you will find that there is more to these fences than meets the eye. What is the actual difference between them?

Ornamental Wrought Iron Fences

Typically, when you think of wrought iron fences, these are the ones that pop up in your mind’s eye. You can find scrollwork and knuckles as two examples of the decorations added to ornamental wrought iron fences. But if you’re looking for something a little more unconventional, then you shouldn’t stop there. Sculptures, artwork, vines, and leaves, along with the initials of the property owner, can all be worked into the iron. These are the most common images associated with this type of fence because, for many years, these fences were associated with the wealthy who could afford to do this to their walls, even if the decorative wrought iron was steel in disguise.

Wrought Iron Fences without Ornamentation

Luckily, there is an alternative in the form of wrought iron fences that don’t feature any ornamentation on them all. It’s much more common to use this fence, so it’s easy to find and fabricate. Panels, posts, toppers, and railings can be mass produced instead of custom made. These fences can also accept modular panels, which makes replacing damaged fence sections easier than you might have thought possible.

Basic Fence Panels: These panels feature pickets. Self-tapping screws are used to attach the posts to the rails of the wrought iron fence. Most of the time, you will need to assemble these fences on your own or with help from someone else, preferably someone who has experience putting them together.

Middle-Tier Panels: These fences will show up at your door prefabricated. One picket runs through the rail instead of merely being screwed into place. Even so, it will still need screws or other types of fasteners for additional stability.

High-End Panels: Finally, let’s look at high-end panels. These wrought iron fences come pre-welded. They are the most durable variety of wrought iron fence available, so if you want the best-wrought iron fences for your money, then these are the models to choose.
