5 Factors to Consider When Buying Gates

What are five factors to consider when buying gates?

Gates can be a stylish addition to a home on top of their protective ability. They go with fences, often connecting separate pieces of fencing and allowing an elegant entry or exit. In this blog we’ll discuss how you find the right gate for you, and what to do next once you’ve found your ideal gates.

Factor 1: Determine the Function of Your Gate

The first step is to figure out what you want your gate to do. Most residential gates are used to block doorways, cover a driveway, or some other small passageway. Different purposes will result in different results. A garden gate are an aesthetic choice, to beautify an attractive area of your property. But driveway gates are much different, since they tend to follow function over form instead of the other way around.

Factor 2: Measure the Dimensions of Your Gate

Before ordering and presumably installing gates, a necessary second step is to measure the dimensions for your gate or gates. You don’t want to have a gate that doesn’t fit where it needs to go, or else it can’t work as a barrier in the way you want it to; measures the gaps, decide where you want the latch to go, and then measure the clearance, how much space you have left, for the gates. Hanging gates on posts will require additional space, so keep that in mind. Manufacturers differ, so be sure to consult with your local helpful professionals when it comes to measurements.

Factor 3: Choose the Material for Your Gate

Now, once you have chosen the gates you want and the dimensions, you have to pick what the gates will be made out of. Does it need to blend in with its surroundings? Consider again the purpose of your gates and that will help you choose the material you will need. Take a look at some of our signature projects for some useful examples. Wood may look more natural, but steel and aluminum are far more durable.

Factor 4: Protect the Integrity of Your Gate

If you do choose a steel gate, it will need to be galvanized to ensure its durability and protect it against the elements.

Factor 5: Embellish the Decorations on Your Gate

A steel gate can be embellished with additional designs and coatings, while wood can be colored and or stained to achieve particular aesthetic effects.
