There is nothing quite as frustrating as speaking with a salesperson and being met with a bunch of jargon you’ve never heard before. If you’re not a fencing expert, it’s understandable that you might not be familiar with common fencing terminology. Here’s a quick guide to some fencing terms, so that you don’t get left in the dark.
Finials – The decorative tips welded to the top of a fence or gate are called finials. These pieces give your fence an iconic look, and not every manufacturer offers them. Finials are what can make your fence a piece of art rather than just a boring structure.
Pickets – Pickets are the vertical pieces that make up the center of your fence. On iron fences the pickets are welded to the rail, while on aluminum ones they screwed together.
Rails – The horizontal parts of the fence panel that pickets pass through are called rails, and they act as the backbone for your fence panel.
Post – Your fence panels and gates connect to posts, the square pieces that are buried in concrete in the ground or bolted in the surface.
Post Cap – Sitting atop your posts are the post caps, a decorative piece that covers it and keeps water and debris from building up. There are a variety of styles for post caps ranging from ball caps to more ornate styles.
Fence Brackets – Aluminum fences do not have utilize fence brackets, but on iron fences a bracket is used to hold the fence to the post.
U-Frame / Gate Frame – A metal frame, called the U-Frame, goes down the bottom side of your gate and serves as the backbone.
