Cleaning Stainless Steel Handrails

Stainless steel handrails are extremely durable, but you should still do a routine cleaning to keep them in good shape.

Stainless steel handrails are an extremely durable railing option for your facility, and can fit in with a large variety of contemporary designs. However, there are a few things you should know about maintaining stainless steel before you install stainless steel handrails. Here’s a quick guide to making sure your handrails stay clean and in perfect condition.

Preserving the Natural Resistance

Stainless steel has a natural stain resistance that stems from an extremely thin, but extremely durable film that forms on the surface of the railing. This film is what gives your stainless steel its hygienic and aesthetic properties, and makes it the ideal choice for many facilities. Stainless steel will not chip, crack or flake. It’s important to do a routine cleaning of your stainless steel in order to preserve the lifespan of this film. A routine cleaning will ensure that your stainless steel railings stay strong and look good for many years to come.

Cleaning Method

All you really need to clean stainless steel is a mild soap or detergent, some warm water, and a soft cloth or synthetic sponge. Rinse your railings in hot water and then dry with a soft cloth to bring out the shine. Occasionally you can use a household cleaner and fine synthetic scourers, but make sure that the cleaner you use is suitable for stainless steel. Do not use a cleaner with chlorides. A routine gentle cleaning is better for your stainless steel than less frequent, aggressive cleanings, and will generally help prevent any soiling or staining of your stainless steel.

More Tips and Tricks

Do not use abrasive powders, metallic scourers, sandpaper, silver or brass cleaners on stainless steel railings. You can remove labels stuck to stainless steel with hot soapy water or a cloth soaked in alcohol. In severe environments you may consider applying a wax protectant (no chlorides!) to your railings. Always check with your manufacturer for the best maintenance practices.
