Keeping your aluminum railings in great shape can be a little overwhelming if you aren’t quite sure where to start. Luckily, aluminum railings are very easy to maintain with a little bit of work every so often. Here are our best tips for cleaning aluminum railings at your property.
A Quick Cleaning
Since aluminum railings are so durable and maintenance-free, a typical cleaning will just involve hosing the surface down. If your aluminum railing has some mud, dirt, or debris on the surface, water should be enough to take care of the problem. You can complete this quick cleaning as often as you would like to, whether that means daily as you leave your pool area or once a week when you tackle other outdoor landscaping and hardscaping tasks. But when quick cleaning isn’t enough, consider the merits of deep cleaning.
A Deep Cleaning
Sometimes, aluminum railings need a little extra tender loving care. If you have hardened mud or sticky debris on your aluminum railing, you will need a little more than water to get it off. Use a non-abrasive mild soap and water to gently scrub off whatever is sticking to the fence. Don’t use an abrasive sponge, a dry sponge, or steel wool to do the job. Those materials can actually cause scratches to form on the aluminum railings while they remove the dirt. Finish by rinsing the entire fence with water. As part of the deep cleaning process, don’t overlook hinges and fasteners that keep the railings together. Rusting is another problem to keep in mind when you are cleaning your aluminum railings.
Clean the Powder Coating
Do you have powder coating on your aluminum railings? That is a good thing! Powder coating is one of the best ways to keep your aluminum railing looking beautiful and needing little-to-no maintenance over time. However, a powder coating will gradually develop a light, chalky-white layer of powder over time. This is totally normal, so you don’t need to worry about your railings being damaged. However, the powder might not look aesthetically pleasing. In that case, scrub it off and polish the aluminum railings to get back the shine that they once had.
