If you want a beautiful accent for both your landscaping and hardscaping, consider combining the best of both worlds and installing an iron fence on top of your hardscaping! Here are some of the basics you should know about this unique and beautiful way to decorate your yard.
Before You Get Started
Before you can get started with the iron fence and concrete hardscaping installation process, you need to check:
- The depth or thickness of the concrete you will be installing on.
- How wide the top of the concrete wall is where you want to place the iron fence—if the top is too thin, you might not be able to install the iron fence on top safely.
Installation Methods
The two main types of installation are flange or deck mounting posts and core-drilling.
- Flange posts are constructed of the same iron as your iron fence and have flanges firmly attached to the bottom. They are pre-drilled with 4 or more holes for easy installation. You can attach this iron post to your concrete hardscaping feature in multiple different ways, and the most common is a concrete wedge anchor.
- Core-drilling is a very effective, more permanent method of adding an iron fence to your concrete hardscape feature. Core drilling burrows a thin, circular hole to place the iron post in. Once the iron posts are inserted, they will be set with a type of mortar or grout instead of concrete. This is a great solution for deeper or bigger hardscaping features, and often less practical for places like a thin concrete patio.
