Dealing with Damage to Your Metal Fences

With spring moving slowly into summer, you will need to do all that you can to protect your metal fences.

You might not think that heat can damage metal, but it can. And with spring moving slowly into summer, you will need to do all that you can to protect your metal fences. Keep an eye out for any signs of warping or melting. Sometimes, it’s much easier to have fence professionals come and fix your fencing for you. But in the meantime, there are some things that you can do.

What Causes Damage?

The soil moving can cause damage to steel and aluminum fences. After all, gravity and erosion have stronger effects than you’ll be able to notice. Eventually, the fences will slide out of position and start to collapse. Hurricanes, windstorms, floods, and lightning strikes can also batter your walls, even if you try to do what you can to protect them against severe weather or other natural disasters. Vehicles passing through your neighborhood, falling tree branches, or errant soccer balls and baseballs can still do a number on your fence, even though they’re not as fragile or expensive as your windows.

Addressing Specific Issues

There are bound to be some issues unique to your situation that you will need to inspect. For one thing, let’s say for argument’s sake that the gate is stuck. Lubricating the hinges and other components should be enough to get it moving regularly again. However, sometimes you’ll need to pull the posts down and repair them or put new fence posts in entirely. That’s because the posts tend to move around and shift as much as the rest of the fence will. The rails can also fall off, or they could become twisted, bent, or damaged in some other way, especially if they fall victim to the effects of rust. Stainless steel resists corrosion, but it isn’t immune. Lastly, think about if there’s too much dirt and dust staining the metal fences in your yard and causing problems below the metallic surface.

Repair or Replace?

The final question you will have to answer is whether repairs will suffice or if you will require a replacement fence. Look at how much damage there is and contact your home insurance company – they can give you more information. Then figure out if it still under warranty – if it is, then repairs could be less costly than you think.
