If you’ve already determined what type of fence you’re looking to install, you may still be wondering what height is best for your project. The last thing anyone wants to do is buy a fence that is just a little bit taller or shorter than you actually wanted. So how do you choose a height without seeing the fence in person? Here are a few considerations when choosing a fence height that will fit your needs.
Standard Heights
Aluminum and iron fences come in standard 3ft, 4ft, 5ft, and 6ft tall heights. Use your personal height as frame of reference.
3 Foot (36 inch) – Shorter, 3ft fences are perfect for decorative ways and for areas where space is limited, or for building atop masonry walls. It’s also particularly good if you’re looking to block off a section of area, but don’t want the fence to obstruct any view into or out of your yard. Larger dogs can usually get over these fences with some effort.
4 Foot (48 inch) – This height is the most common choice due to its practicality. You can have a conversation with someone on the other side, and it won’t block any views. However, it’s tall enough that you don’t have to worry about someone falling over it.
5 Foot (60 inch) – You can still see over a 5ft fence, but now it’s shaping up into more of a barrier and it provides a more enclosed feel. Dogs will typically not be able to jump over these fences, making it an excellent choice for backyards or larger projects where the fence is set further away from your home/business.
6 Foot (72 inch) – 6ft tall fences send a strong ‘stay out’ security message, and people typically cannot see over them. If you’re looking to make a large area feel enclosed and cozy, a 6ft tall fence is the perfect solution.
