Patio season is here, and with bright days of warm sunshine and cool breezes, you’re going to want to spend as much time as you can out on your patio. Even so, no matter how high off the ground it is, making sure that you have a sturdy and secure patio railing in place is essential. So if you need a new patio railing, here are some tips for you to follow.
Think About Your Home’s Aesthetic
The first step is to think about how your home looks right now. The current aesthetic and levels of curb appeal can go a long way towards helping you determine which patio railings you should get next. Sometimes you will need to rely on wood and wrought iron, and in other cases, you can get more creative. This is where glass and metal come into play. But if you don’t know what to do, then some research won’t hurt.
Choosing a Wood “Look”
Wooden railings are adequate, but eventually, they will wear down. Part of the problem is the weathering effect that causes them to look older than they are. This can draw the ire of your HOA or be the punchline of jokes circulated by your neighbors. One solution to this problem is to choose a wood-mimic look for your patio railings instead. Vinyl that is fabricated to resemble wood is a possible railing material, although vinyl is also a better fit for the fences around your yard. For the sake of stability, you want metal.
Consider Metal Patio Railings
If you aren’t satisfied with the way that wood and vinyl look, or if you aren’t convinced that they are stable enough, then metal patio railings are the way. You can have pickets and posts and keep it simple, or you can also decide to add some intriguing ornaments that can make all of your visitors jealous. The choice is yours. Cable rails are versatile and attractive, and even aluminum has its benefits. With aluminum, you can mimic the look of wrought iron but still have the lower-cost benefit of aluminum.
Adding Ornaments to Your Railing
Ornamentation is also important. If you are set on staying true to the principle of minimalism, then decorations probably aren’t the right look for your new patio railing. But if you want some more eye-catching, then post caps, double top rails, carved pickets, undermount lighting, hoops, spears, and rings are all possibilities that are open to you.
