Now that April is here and May isn’t far behind, the time has come to reopen your pool once again. But if you didn’t have a pool fence last year, or the year before that, then you need to have a pool fence installed. Some neighborhoods won’t allow you to start building a backyard pool without a plan for a fence of some kind. Let’s take a closer look at what you need to think about when you need a pool fence.
Pool Fence Considerations
If you’ve never had to deal with planning out a backyard pool, then you probably don’t know where to start. For one thing, you might be unsure about the proper height of the fence. That said, the fence needs to be at least four feet high. This is the minimum, and should suffice; most HOAs won’t let you make your fence taller than six feet high. You’ll also need to avoid adding crossbars to the fence. They might help the fence look better, but it also makes it easier for your kids or pets to use them to climb over the fence and potentially fall into the pool when you’re not there to watch them. When the fence is in the planning stages, you should also consult with county officials to see if you need any permits for your new fence. Oh, and don’t forget about the gate! The gate should be able to close or latch by itself without user input.
Aesthetic Dilemmas
Think about the landscaping and hardscape features around your pool. You can choose from many different shapes and sizes, so don’t think you need to contain yourself to the traditional square or rectangular pool shapes. Depending on what you want to do, a glass partition with glass or metal railings might do the trick. Or you could go for a sealed wooden fence or ornamental wrought iron or even a vinyl fence. All of these are options that can help you solve an aesthetic dilemma when designing your pool fence.
Budget Constraints
Ultimately, what you can do will come down to how much room you have in your budget. An aluminum fence might be the solution you need, especially if you don’t like how any of the alternatives look.
