Fall Maintenance Tips for your Iron or Aluminum Fence

Fall Maintenance for your residential fence

Maintaining your fence this fall is an important part of keeping it in good condition for the winter.

As fall sweeps into the area, it is time to think about how to maintain your fence before the winter snow settles in. So while you are out doing your last lawn cut of the season or out walking your pets, take a moment to look at your fence. Take a look at some of our fall maintenance tips.

Start Inspecting

The first thing to do is to inspect your fence. Make sure to inspect your fence on a day with good lighting and a day when you are not rushed. Look for things like chipped paint, rust, visible damage to the fence, dislodged posts, loose earth around the posts, and potential areas where damage could happen like pooling water, overhanging branches, and any vegetation close to the fence. After identifying these issues, it is time to fix them!

Paint Chips and Rust

Paint chips, peeling, and rust can be a major problem for your iron or aluminum fence. Rust can degrade your fence and cause serious damage. To fix these problems, you need to begin by sanding the fence before applying a primer and paint that are both rust resistant.

Damaged or Dislodged Fence Posts

If you find damage or see that your posts are dislodged from the ground, it is time to call your Hercules Fence contractor in order to have them professionally fixed. Fence posts that are damaged or dislodged can compromise the integrity of the fence.

Loose Earth or Dips

Loose earth or dips around your fence can be a sign of water pooling around your fence posts .The water can cause rotting, rust, and can ruin your fence if not taken care of quickly. If you notice these signs, it is time to move some earth. Pack dirt around your posts to help keep them from become loose and dislodged. Make sure the ground is level and is not loosely packed.

Vegetation

Trees, shrubs, and vines are all common hazards to your fence. Branches can fall onto your fence while other vegetation produces acids that can weaken and break down paint and fencing materials over time. Make sure your branches and vegetation are trimmed back away from your fences in order to keep them from harming your fence.

Fall maintenance is an important part of keeping your fence in good shape. Make sure you take the time to inspect and correct the problems with your residential fence before it becomes a major issue during the winter!
