Fixing a Porch Handrail

A beautiful new porch is easy to achieve!

Porches are a key part of any attractive and inviting home. If you have a charming porch, but a porch handrail that could use a little help, here’s how to spruce it up. Whether your porch handrail is old, not up to code, or has been damaged in some other way, fixing it is is easier than you might think.

What You Will Need for Fixing a Porch Handrail

Get these items together before hand so fixing up your porch handrail is as easy as possible.

-Caulk

-Wood Glue

-Air Compressor

-Nail Gun

For each 12-foot section of rail you will also need to have:

-ten 8-foot lengths of 2-by-2 inch pine

-12-foot top rail

-12-foot bottom rail

Create The Jig

Draw your pattern true to size on a sheet of plywood first. Then cut spacer blocks and stick them into place, following the pattern. This lets you get the job done without repetitive measuring

Remove The Old Rails

Be careful when you remove any old rails. Be sure you do not damage any of the surrounding material while you do this. You can use a reciprocating saw to make this process easier.

Cut The Top And Bottom Rails To Fit

Measure the top and bottom rails on their own, as the columns holding them in place are often tapered. The bottom measurement is often shorter than the top. Cut the ends of the new rails to fit these measurements and the curve of the column.

Set Up The Jig

Measure the center of each rail and run spindles each way from the center point. This makes sure that the spacing against the columns will be as consistent as possible.

Glue and Nail

Carefully nail spindles through both the bottom and top rails. Then glue well at each joint.

Installing Brand New Porch Handrails

Install the handrails by following these steps. Tack them into place. Then pre-drill and screw from underneath to keep the screws out of sight. Congratulations! Your new railing is complete!
