Getting Rid of Rust Damage in Wrought Iron Fences

Whether it’s placed around your home or business, when you have wrought iron fences on your property you can feel better knowing how long they’ll last.

Do you have a wrought iron fence? Whether it’s placed around your home or business, when you have wrought iron fences on your property you can feel better knowing how long they’ll last. But making sure your wrought iron fences last longer means you’ll have to get rid of rust damage.

Getting Started

Start off by doing whatever you can to remove some of the rust with sandpaper. Alternatively, you could use two tools called a sanding block or a rotary tool that is equipped with a sanding disc. Depending on how badly the wrought iron fence is rusted, it can be difficult to remove the rust. Luckily, loose flakes can be dealt with quickly. Unfortunately, for more stubborn cases, you will need the tools we just named.

Use a Brush

You’ll need a brush for this next step. Work your way into the holes left by the rust with a brush that has stiff bristles. That way, you can get rid of any rust you might have missed earlier.

Cover the Holes

Fence putty can be more useful than you might have imagined. One of the ways you can put it to good use is to fill in holes caused by runaway rust damage. Once you have applied the putty, flatten it out as much as you can. Not only will the holes be gone, but the patched holes will also be surprisingly smooth and beautiful to look at whenever you look outside. After all, wrought iron fences can help enhance the curb appeal of your building – so don’t hesitate to make them look as pretty as possible.

Remove Putty

This suggestion may sound odd, especially considering what we said in the previous section. But what you’ll want to do here is wipe away any extra putty that you don’t need to get the job done. When you complete this part of the process, you shouldn’t feel any grooves or bumps indicating that the putty isn’t level with the rest of the fence around it.

Repaint It

Find the right paint color that will allow the repaired segments of the fence to blend in with the undamaged parts. However, the remaining parts of the fence might have been worn down by snow, ice, and wind. If that’s the case, you’ll have to repaint the entire fence.
