If you have a wrought iron fence, you want it to look like the day it was installed. Iron is a long-lasting and durable material. Even so, it still requires maintenance from time to time. A wrought iron fence can become weathered and cracked over time leaving it looking old. Here are a few tips to keep your wrought iron fence looking as sturdy and mighty as it ever has:
- Protect your investment – To ward off rust and weather elements, it is best to apply a protective coat of wax to your wrought iron fence. It can also be helpful to cover your fence in a tarp when it rains and if it is located near a pool, a protective sealant can be purchase that prevents it from degrading or rusting.
- Check for loose fence posts – If you find any loose fence posts, don’t kick or bend them as it will weaken the concrete base. A drill fitted with a concrete drill bit should allow you to drill down and make a space that is big enough that you can straighten the fence post out. Then, filling it with some quick drying concrete will ensure that the post is back to the straight position it was previously in.
- Get rid of the rust – When rust happens to your wrought iron fence, the best remedy is usually an emery cloth in addition to using a rust neutrilizer. Other solutions include sand paper. The objective is to make a smooth surface that you can repaint later. After removing the rust, spray the rust neutralizer before repainting part of your fence.
