How to Clean Your Railings

How to Clean Your Railings

How do your railings look?

How do your railings look? Now that the time has come for spring cleaning, you might as well focus your efforts on your railings, especially the ones outside your home. Railings might be more common around commercial buildings and government offices, but that shouldn’t stop you from putting rails around your home. Even so, keep them clean by following these suggestions.

Cleaning Brass Railings

You will often find railings made out of solid brass or rails that are plated with brass. However, taking care of each of them is vastly different; there is no one-size-fits-all approach, sadly. Brass is vulnerable to oxidation and rust, so you need to act before they lose their lustrous shine. Warm water filled with soap should enough to help you lift the stains. Depending on how stubborn these stains are, you might want to use some dish detergent instead. It’s a bad idea to use anything stronger than that. Polish works on regular brass, but will damage plated brass instead.

Cleaning Stainless Steel Railings

You’ll also find two kinds of stainless steel. One is called polished, and the other is called satin. Stainless steel normally repels the effects of rust, but that doesn’t mean it can’t get dirty. Using some distilled water should do the job of cleaning the railings. After that, be sure to rub it dry with a soft cloth or even some newspaper that you would otherwise dispose of; however, for tougher stains, you will have to try something else. In this case, you’re dealing with oil and grease marks. To get rid of them, you’ll need something more potent, such as acetone. There are also polishes specially formulated for cleaning stainless steel, but whichever cleaner you choose, be sure to put on some protective gloves first!

Cleaning Aluminum Railings

Like with aluminum fencing, there’s not much you have to do to keep your aluminum rails looking great. Getting rid of dust is the worst you’ll have to think about, and that ordinarily calls for soap and warm water. Make sure to wipe up moisture residue with a soft cloth. If you live near the water, taking care of aluminum railings can be somewhat more involved. The rails on high-rise buildings can also be covered in dirt, grime, and bird waste. That’s when solvents and cleaners come into play.
