How to Maintain Your Chain Link Fence

Maintaining your chain link fence is much easier than you think.

Maintaining your chain link fence is much easier than you think. Compared to other types of fencing material that you could use, they don’t call for much TLC. Even with that in mind, you will need to spend some time taking care of it. What are your plans for this weekend?

Protect It Against Rust

Chain link may not seem like your typical metal, but that doesn’t mean it can’t fall victim to rust. A rusty fence is a weak fence, and whether you are trying to keep intruders out or preventing your kids or pets from falling into the backyard pool, corrosion is your worst enemy. Add a coating that resists the effects of rust once every year. That means if you haven’t done it in the past six months or so, then you probably should. Make sure you focus your efforts on the bottom of the fence, where most of the dirt, dew, and moisture will collect, even if you can’t see it right away.

Keep It Clean

Chain link fences are seen as ugly, but that doesn’t automatically condemn them to be nothing more than an eyesore. As with everything else around the exterior of your property, you should strive to keep it clean. All of our lives are busy, which is why it’s understandable if you don’t have time to pay attention to your fence. The least you can do is to keep it clean. What and dish soap can help you get rid of any stains that were left behind by birds or other wild animals. A hose or a cotton towel will help you deal with more stubborn stains that you can’t lift.

Trim the Greenery

Climbing plants will attempt to use your fence as a staging area as they chase the sun. Another way to make sure that your barriers don’t fall over is to trim back the bushes, trees, plants, and flowers that are flourishing in the dirt around your fence.

Repair It When Necessary

Occasionally, your chain link fence will let you down. This is because, like everything else, it will be worn down by gravity, the weather, and the passage of time. That means you need to repair it whenever necessary. One suggestion for minimizing repairs is to discourage anyone from climbing on it.
