How to Paint Your Wrought Iron Fence

It might be time to give your wrought iron fence a fresh coat of paint.

Wrought iron fences have been a classic and elegant addition to properties for decades. However, over time wrought iron can become rusty and worn down by the elements. A proper refinishing may be necessary. And even if your wrought iron looks good, a fresh coat of paint with a different color can add some fresh style to your home.

Prepare to Paint

Painting your wrought iron fence requires some preparation, and the success of the job hinges on how well you prepare. You will want to pick a warm, dry day to do your painting. Do not paint if the surface of your fence is wet or if humidity is greater than 80 percent. You will also want to avoid painting if the temperature is less than 50 degrees. When painting make sure your workspace and surrounding surfaces are protected by drop cloths and painter’s tape. You don’t want to overspray or let your paint drips get caught in the wind.

Remove Old Finish and Rust

In order for a new coat of paint to adhere properly you need to remove the old paint and rust from your wrought iron. You want the surface to be free of loose paint flakes, debris and dirt. You can clean your wrought iron with a 50/50 vinegar/water solution or a mild detergent. Make sure to scrub off any extra grime and bleach and water to get rid of any mold. Afterward, sand and scrape your wrought iron to raise the surface for better paint adhesion.

Apply Primer

You will need to spray your wrought iron with a primer made specifically for metals. An aerosol primer works best, but to ensure complete coverage you may need to go over some areas with a brush. Give your fence at least two coats and allow the primer to dry for 24 hours.

Paint Your Wrought Iron

Apply your paint as soon as your primer is done drying. This will help the paint bond to your wrought iron fence. If you’re using a spray paint, hold the paint can 8 to 12 inches from your fence and keep the can moving at a steady pace to avoid excess paint drip. For the best results apply a second coat of paint within an hour of applying the first.
