When you invest in a metal fence for your property, you may be thinking that you don’t have to worry about things like the weather. While it’s true that your metal fence is very durable and more secure than many other types against weather, there are still a few factors that can affect it over time. In general, most of the damage your fence might face will originate from other issues. Rust and corrosion are always the most significant risks with a metal fence, but most of the time these processes can only start if there are scratches or chips in the paint coating a metal fence.
Summer Sun
While sun and heat don’t have the same effects on a metal fence that hey do on wood or older varieties of vinyl, it can still cause some damage. If you have a black painted fence and live in an area with high temperatures, there is the risk that your fence might become so hot it could begin to warp. You will also want to look into whether or not your metal fence has a multilayer finish, which will prevent the paint from flaking or chipping when high heat is in effect.
Winter Snow
For a metal fence outside of coastal towns, winter is the hardest season. Most metal fences have a distinct weakness – salt. From road salt in winter to salt breezes blown in off the ocean, salt can cause corrosion at a far more rapid rate than usual. To fight this risk, try not to use road salt near your fence, if your property lines a city treated road, give your fence a rinse and clean with a gentle cleanser and freshwater as weather permits. By ensuring that salt doesn’t sit on your metal fence, you’ll reduce the risks significantly. In most places, winter adds the threat of moisture and rapidly changing temperatures. To protect from the cold, a thick coat of sealant is all you need. Protecting from moisture is a little more complicated. Several times a year you will want to do a thorough check of your metal fence to look for chips, scratches, and anywhere the seal has been broken. Once spotted, you will want to act fast to clean and spot paint the area to ensure that no moisture can get in and start the growth of rust.
