If you’ve installed a powder-coated gate, congratulations—you’ve made a wise choice. It’s an environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and highly durable type of gating that has gone through a treatment process to help it stay in perfect condition. That treatment involves acid wash baths which help clean the gate and creates a stronger bond between the metal and the powder coating.
As a result, maintaining a powder-coated gate shouldn’t require too much. What little maintenance it does require is easy and we have all the tips you need to keep your powder-coated gate looking fantastic.
Preventing Dirt and Salt
As durable as a powder coating may make your gate, it won’t make it invincible. You still need to think about how maintaining a powder-coated gate works. Climate and environmental changes, in particular, may impact your powder coating. Eventually, dirt may build up in the crevices of your gate, allowing insects and bacteria to make a home in the gate, contributing to the breakdown of your powder coating. Regular cleaning is the solution.
Basic Cleaning
First, use a wet sponge to gently wipe your gate and remove any loose dirt or debris. A soft brush or washcloth will also work, whatever you have to remove that surface-level grime. If there’s a buildup of salt, you may want to consider using a more stiff brush alongside a mild household detergent.
The Right Products
Determine any detergent you use does not contain solvents or petroleum-based chemicals. These could damage the powder coating on your gate. If you’re unsure, read through the directions for your cleaning product. If it recommends wearing gloves, that’s a sign that the product will likely be too harsh for a powder coat and should be avoided.
Washing and Drying
Ideally, you should be able to simply rinse detergent away from the fence with lukewarm water. After that, let it dry naturally, or you can use a cloth to dry it and polish it simultaneously. Power washing is another option and may be more efficient in terms of washing detergent off, but it could leave more residue behind.
Cleaning Frequency
Now that you know the process, you may wonder how often it needs to be done. For most climates, we recommend once per year. If you live in a ruthless weather, or have had a lot of severe weather, you may want to do it twice, even three times a year. Maintaining a powder-coated gate helps prevent the buildup of unwanted dirt, so ensure you’re doing this easy maintenance task.
