Metal Fences: Repair or Replace?

metal fence during winter

Does your metal fence need repair before winter?

When it comes to fences, metals like aluminum and wrought iron are incredibly durable and secure. Still, even the strongest metal fences are subject to damage and can benefit from repair over time. As the season changes, it’s important to make sure that your metal fence is in good condition and will be able to withstand winter weather.

Wrought iron fences can rust. Aluminum fences won’t, but they are also not as strong as wrought iron. If for whatever reason your fence becomes damaged, contact a professional fence contractor to take care of it as soon as possible. Broken and rusted fences look unsightly and are an invitation to burglars.

Rusted Fences

If your fence is in a state of disrepair, the first thing you’ll need to do is determine what type of damage it is and how bad is it. Rusted areas and problems relating to how the fence looks can be easily solved with a fresh coat of paint. The painting process for rusted iron fences can be quite involved, so it’s recommended that you find a qualified painter for the job. Rust and dirt will need to be rubbed down with stainless steel wire, powerwashed or sandblasted before painting. It will also need to be washed with a non-ionic detergent. Once it dries, a rust convert should be applied followed by an oil-based primer. Finally, the fence can be painted over with an oil-based paint that’s approved for metal use so that it won’t crack or chip off.

Broken Fences

Warped, broken or missing sections of fence will need to be replaced. In the case of iron fences, these sections can be sawed off and be welded with a new replacement section. If too much of the fence is warped or rusted to a dangerous degree, it may end up being more worthwhile to just replace the entire fence.

Aluminum fences are easier to repair because the parts are screwed together rather than welded. As such, if a crossbar or fence post needs to be replaced it can simply be unscrewed and replaced with a new part.
