There’s still a month or so until Labor Day, and you know what means. Summer is almost over. But even after all the public and community pools close down for the season, you can keep having all the fun in the sun that you want. The secret is that you need to have a pool fence.
Why Is It So Necessary?
A pool fence helps to make your swimming hole a more fun place to be. Don’t forget the sunscreen and cold drinks, and stay in the shade when you feel need it. But since we’re only human and it’s not possible to be around all of the time, you don’t want someone to fall into the water. That’s why having a pool fence is so important – it can prevent tragic situations just like this. In the end, adult supervision is the real difference-maker, and that is something that can’t be ignored or downplayed.
Regulations for Pool Fences
In the spirit of responsibility, rules for pool fences have been issued and revised over the years. All of the regulations fall under the purview of the International Building Code, specifically IBC Code section 305. This code has to do with pool barriers, which is something a fence provides. It may have been a few years since the last update, as it changes every three years – either way, make sure you stay on top of how it might have changed since 2016.
Pools That Require Fences
Different types of residential swimming pools will need different pool fences. That’s just a fact of life. For example, in-ground pools need to have one installed. This advisory goes for the pool whether or not it is only partially set in the ground or entirely in the ground. Above-ground pools should also have fences, but for these, you will need to make a judgment call based on how deep the water is. All spas and hot tubs need to have a cover on top of them when they are not in use. Whether or not you decide to add a fence comes down to how deep the tub can be and how much water is in it. Lastly, portable pools don’t require a wall around them. This may lead you to think that they are the exception that proves the rule. That said, when they’re not being used, they either need to be in storage or held behind a fence.
