A few months ago, we discussed how to clean a rusted chain link fence. But what about rust removal from other types of fences? And how do you do it for metal railings, gates and fences? In this blog we will focus on rust removal from metal railings, gates, and fences. Read on to learn more about how to do this in several easy steps.
Rust Removal is Simple!
1. Remove any loose rust and chipping paint you can see. Wire brushes are immensely helpful tools for this step. Another helpful tool for this step is a power washer. Power washers can blast new rust and loosen it. Once the first layer of rust or paint is gone, you can move on.
2. The next step is to use a cleaner or degreaser product. Certain commercial products formulated for this purpose are probably your best bet. Make sure that the surface you are cleaning doesn’t have any coating of dirt, oil, or grime. A thorough rinse with water should be enough to help clean off any layers of common filth.
3. There are also certain commercial products to deal with rust. These products can be applied once the water you used to rinse off the surface in question is dry. A helpful trick you should know about is to use a painter’s mitt, which you can surely pick up from your local hardware store. The mitt makes painting difficult areas much easier. Rusted areas will turn black again. Then you will know the rust has been taken care of and you can proceed to painting.
4. Wait 24 hours or so for the commercial products to dry off and be ready to accept your fresh paint.
5. After your paint has been applied, all you have to do is stand back and admire your handiwork. The rust removal process should also guard your metal railings, gates, and fences from further rusting for a good long time.
