The Best Materials for Fabricating Metal Handrails

The Best Materials for Fabricating Metal Handrails

If you’re considering the potential beauty of metal handrails, you should familiarize yourself with the primary metals that are used to create them.

Styles come and go in many facets of interior design, but one style that has persisted for a while now is the use of metal where we once would have exclusively chosen wood. A case in point is in banisters and handrails. Often combined with cement surfaces to achieve an industrial aesthetic, metal handrails are edging into other designs as well. If you’re considering the potential beauty of metal handrails, you should familiarize yourself with the primary metals that are used to create them.

Steel

When choosing steel for your metal handrails, there are three major options. Mild steel is the most cost-effective since the material costs are low, and it is easy to work with. It has less strength and durability than other steels, however, and if the handrails will see heavy use, carbon steel would be a better bet. In either case, this type of steel is prone to corrosion in the elements. If you’re planning for railings that will be out in the weather, opt for galvanized steel. Galvanizing steel protects it from the weather and prolongs the lifespan. It also increases the cost of the product. Finally, stainless steel is another popular choice since it is still easy to work with, but it is less prone to corrosion than mild steel. Stainless steel is the go-to choice for modern looks and a stylish finish.

Brass

Brass is less popular than it has been in the past, but that is in part because it is associated with a very specific aesthetic. It has an old-world charm, reminiscent of Irish pubs or aging libraries. Certain modern buildings can still employ this decorative metal, but more often than not, it is in conjunction with other metals, such as brass fittings on wire stringers. In the designs where ornamental brass railings are appropriate, they are a beautiful, low maintenance choice.

Aluminum

Aluminum is a popular choice for metal handrails because it is very lightweight, especially compared to steel or iron, which makes it easy to work with. This also decreases its strength, however, making it more prone to dents and scratches and requiring more uprights for safety. If you’re using it for metal uprights, it won’t corrode, but it will oxidize, turning white and developing pitting. You can prevent this with powder coating in many color options.
