Tips for Caring for Your Iron Fence

Maintaining your iron fence

Even iron fences need some tender love and care every now and then.

An iron fence requires relatively low maintenance, but it will still need some TLC every now and then. Iron fences are an attractive addition to any home, but there are a few tips you need to follow to make sure it stays attractive. To keep your iron fence looking pristine, let’s take at these important maintenance tips.

Clean Your Iron Fence

To clean your iron fence, you don’t need a lot of tools or supplies. When you notice that your fence is dirty, all you really need is warm water, dish detergent, and a positive attitude! Focus on cleaning dirt that accumulates on the fence. After that, work on removing any and all rust spots. For the hard-to-reach areas, you can use a toothbrush to make sure every inch of your fence is cleaned. After you have scrubbed your fence clean of dirt and rust, rinse your iron fence with water. Not only will your iron fence continue to look pristine when it is cleaned, but it will make your next scheduled cleaning that much easier. Dirt and rust spots will more easily stand out, and you can quickly remove them as soon as they appear.

Fix Bent Sections of Your Iron Fence

While iron fences are incredibly durable, it is true that accidents could bend certain parts of your iron fence. If you have experience with repairing iron fences, you could use a blowtorch to heat the bent sections of the fence. Then, you can hammer the bent sections back into place. But this work shouldn’t be conducted if you don’t have experience, as you have to use extreme caution when using these tools. Also, you should look at the costs of repairing the fence to how much it would cost for a simple fence replacement.

Protect Your Iron Fence

Rain and humidity can cause iron fences to start rusting. Depending on your climate, your fence could constantly be beaten down by the elements. In order to help protect your iron fence, you should apply a protective coat of wax to the fence. You can also cover it with a tarp if you are expecting a big rainstorm. If your iron fence is near a pool, it will also be more likely to develop rust. You can purchase protective sealants to help fend off the rust. But if you have any questions about what type of sealants work best or how often to use them, you should consult a company with more than 70 years of experience in the industry.
