Tools for Your Next Fencing Project

Your basic fencing project only requires a handful of tools and skills, so the DIY approach is appealing to handy homeowners and those looking to save some cash.

Building your own fence can be one of the most satisfying home improvement projects you ever complete. Not only is it satisfying in a productive DIY-sense, making your own repairs is immensely beneficial, adding value to your home for years to come. Your basic fencing project only requires a handful of tools and skills, so the DIY approach is appealing to handy homeowners and those looking to save some cash. If you’re getting started with fencing your home, you will need some simple supplies and equipment to help you install and maintain your fence. Depending on the type of fencing project, you might need only some of these tools; but for larger areas such as farmland, you may need heavy machinery as well.

Fencing Project Equipment Checklist

  • Post-Hole Digger: A post hole digger is an essential tool for installing your fence. Its purpose is to dig small holes. The handles are pulled apart to close the tool and grab the chunk of loosened soil, making it ideal for planting your fence posts.
  • Tamping Tool: A fencing tamper is an earth ram with a round head specialized for packing earth into fence post holes. We highly recommend this tool for cutting through denser patches of land.
  • Plumb Bob: A plumb bob is a weight, usually with a pointed tip on the bottom, suspended from a string and used as a vertical reference line, or plumb-line. This tool allows your fence to be erected in a straight fashion while being used as point of reference.

Waterproof Your Fence for Fall

The harsher conditions of fall can significantly damage your fence, especially if it’s wooden. So, it’s advised to waterproof your fence either through paint or sealant. Most waterproofing sealants are silicone rubber-based, and one application provides a long-term solution. They protect wooden fences from water, extreme temperatures, and the damaging effects of sunlight. There are many types of paints that can also protect wood fences from the ravages of moisture and frost. Latex and alkyd-based paints are commonly used for waterproofing wood fences and providing protection as well highlighting your fence’s natural grain. All of these tools can be picked up at your local hardware or home improvement store!
