A residential driveway gate adds value, style and security to your home. But when it comes to installing an automatic gate, you might at first be overwhelmed by all the options. Here’s a quick guide to help demystify some of the confusion and help you determine what’s the right iron gate type for your property.
Slide Gates
Slide gates, as the name implies, slide on wheels from left to right or right to left, not unlike the kinds of doors you might find at a department store. Slide gates are an attractive style, but if you don’t have the space to fit the gate on one side of your driveway when it’s open, then a slide gate likely isn’t the best solution for you.
Swing Gates
Swing gates swing open just like the door to your home. They can open inward or outward, but outward swinging gates must be positioned with enough space so that they don’t smack into passing cars. Swing gates can involve a single door or a pair of double “french doors”. Double doors are the more attractive option, but single door swing gates require less room to install.
Barrier Gates
A barrier gate is intended for vehicle and traffic control. These are the kind of gates you see at parking garages and toll booths. Barrier gates are not particularly attractive or even add much in the way of security, but they do deter people from coming onto your property.
Vertical Pivot Gates
Vertical pivot gates are like barrier gates, but instead of scrawny piece of wood or steel, a hefty 8 foot tall gate rises and falls to let cars pass. These gates are the perfect option when you don’t have enough space for a slide or swing gate, but need more security than what a barrier gate provides.
Vertical Lift Gates
Due to their cost, vertical lift gates are almost exclusively used for commercial applications. Vertical lift gates retract vertically straight above passing vehicles. They offer the most security of any gate type, and are often just as aesthetically appealing.
