What Fence Should I Get? Metal Fence vs. Wood Fence

Perhaps the most common decision homeowners have to make when it comes to fencing is whether they want a metal fence or a wood fence. These are arguably the two most commonly used materials for residential fencing. Of course, they both have their own unique attributes, as well as downsides, but here at Hercules Custom Iron we’re inclined to think that metal fencing is the best option of the two. Read on for a comparison of metal fences and wood fences that will help you make your decision!

Metal Fence vs. Wood Fence

Durability

When it comes to durability, metal has wood beat. A properly maintained wood fence can last for many years, but metal can almost always last longer. Wood is simply more susceptible to the elements, and requires more maintenance to keep the elements from doing their damage. Wood can rot due to moisture problems, attract mold and mildew growth, and is a target for some insects as well. Yearly staining is virtually essential in order to protect the wood. Metal on the other hand requires little upkeep, and will last for a very long time.

Winner – Metal

Maintenance

This is another area where metal fence trumps wood. Iron and aluminum are both very low maintenance, and usually only require an occasional washing and touching up rust spots for iron. Wood requires painting, staining and sealing to protect it and keep it looking good. Over the course of the life of a fence, you’ll spend much less time with metal fence maintenance than you will with a wood fence.

Winner – Metal

Visual Appeal

Metal and wood fences both have their own unique visual appeal, so it’s hard to compare the two. Both are also very traditional fence materials. In the end, it depends on what your preference is. If you’re going for an ornate look, it’s metal all the way. Custom iron can be intricately designed to give you that classic, ornate iron fence look. Wood fences, on the other hand, are better suited to a rustic, warm, traditional look.
