What to Look For in a Security Fence

A good security fence is your best defense when it comes to keeping your property safe from outside threats.

A good security fence is your best defense when it comes to keeping your property safe from outside threats. When designing or choosing your new security fence, there are a few things to consider based on your specific security needs, like the material, the height, and if obstacles are appropriate. Whether you’re looking for a security fence to match your aesthetic, or just need a barrier to keep intruders out, here are some options that will keep your property secure.

Sturdy Material

While solid fences are great for privacy, they are not ideal for a security fence as they provide hiding places for burglars. Think of materials that are strong and see-through, like chain-link fencing or wrought iron fencing. Chain-link fences come in a variety of colors and finishes and are very versatile. They are relatively easy to move, just take the links out and adjust the posts and they are durable, as they aren’t susceptible to rot or insect damage like wood fencing. A wrought iron fence is also a great, durable, versatile option for a security fence. If your needs lend to a more elegant aesthetic, there are a lot of design options. While wrought iron does require a bit more maintenance than chain-link fencing, they are still relatively low-maintenance and are incredibly tough; a potential intruder would find it impossible to cut through wrought iron. It’s also difficult for animals to climb, so if that is a priority of yours, you can feel confident that your pets won’t get out and wild animals won’t get in.

Obstacles

Depending on your security needs, obstacles may be another great way to combat potential intruders. The height of your fence should be around 8 feet tall, but if you have a homeowner’s association where you plan to build your fence, double check their height requirements before installation. Limiting the number of horizontal rails on your fence is also a wise decision, as it will restrict the intruder’s ability to boost themselves up and over your fence. Finials or razor wire are also excellent countermeasures for keeping climbers away from your fence. Your fence should also fully enclose your yard, and a heavy-duty gate would be another effective option to maintain your level of security.
