Wind, Ice, and Snow? Oh No!

Clean off the snow

As you are cleaning off your sidewalk, make sure you take the time to clean off your custom iron fence!

As homeowners worry about digging out their vehicles and burrowing out of their home, not many people are thinking about their fence. But what about the fences? How many homeowners are thinking about their residential fence and the affect snow might have on their fencing material? You have invested quite a bit of money into your fence, so protecting it should be on your list of winter to-dos.

Protecting Your Fence

You’ve no doubt been told that snow is actually made up of frozen water molecules. But when the temperature warms up a bit, the fluffy white stuff changes back into good ol’ H20, leaving puddles and possible ice dams all over your property. Not only do these puddles mean lots of mud, they can actually cause damage to your residential fencing. If the base of your residential fence is exposed to the elements, it could mean permanent damage to your fence. So how can you make sure water doesn’t affect your fence? By clearing the way, make sure to remove any snow or ice away from your fence base to avoid this damage. Before the snow hits, pack the ground with dirt to make sure your posts are exposed.

Iron, Aluminum, and Steel Fence Maintenance

Using de-icing salts can be convenience and easily sprinkled around your home to help with ice. But your metal fence can be harmed by such an easy solution. The chemicals in these products can be corrosive to metal and metal fences. While these solvents can still be used, make sure to minimize the contact between your fence and the chemicals. By minimizing the contact, you will be able to mitigate the damages snow causes on your custom iron fence!

When the snow has finally stopped falling and you are able to see your fence, it is important to resume your regular fence inspections to ensure there isn’t any visible damage to your fence.
